Welcome

Our History

For more than 100 years, the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth has stood at the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains. The Church began when a group of ladies became concerned about the religious life in their community. These ladies were known as the Ladies Aide Society which was composed of the following members: Mrs. S. M. Barnett, Mrs. Floreny Bradley, Mrs. W. S. Cox, Miss Lula Gladden, Miss Martha Holbrooks, Mrs. Tom Moreland and Mrs. Hardy Rhyne.

Sunday School and worship services were conducted for a period of time, in the school house located on 5th Avenue. Later, those attending saw the need of organizing into a local church for the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus, The First Baptist Church was born with thirteen charter members. A gift of land from the Chatsworth Land Company, located at the corner of Cherokee Street and 3rd Avenue, enabled the Church to start planning for a new building.

A new frame building was erected and for approximately 35 years was the place of meeting for members of the First Baptist Church. The church grew and moved to Market Street in the 40s. They secured the lot on the corner of 4th Avenue and Market Street and built what we now call the chapel. This facility could hold up to 250 people. The church prospered and grew even more, and by the 60s, we needed more space! The church built a larger Sanctuary next door to the chapel that could hold up to 600 worshipers at one time.

Our church on Market Street directly across the street from the Murray County Courthouse has a passion to see the Gospel taken to the nations. We open our church and our hearts to our community. Come, be part of our faith family at First Baptist Church Chatsworth today!
